The Most Energy-Efficient Utilities Are in Massachusetts

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has published its first energy efficiency scorecard for utilities and has found “striking regional differences” across the U.S. Eversource Massachusetts and National Grid Massachusetts top the list with the same score, followed by Pacific Gas & Electric (2nd place), Baltimore Gas & Electric (3rd), and Eversource Connecticut (4th).

In the blog article announcing the results, ACEEE states that the “2017 Utility Energy Efficiency Scorecard” looked at the performance of the 51 largest electric utilities in the United States and highlights cutting-edge efforts. The complete report can be downloaded here.

Dr. Kurt Roth, Director of Building Energy Systems at Fraunhofer CSE, reacted to the news: “Massachusetts has the most aggressive energy efficiency goals in the country, and we are delighted that the ACEEE has recognized the success of our partners at Eversource and National Grid in achieving those goals. We look forward to continuing to work together with them to help enable the next-generation of EE programs.”

Fraunhofer CSE has worked on several projects with Eversource and National Grid in Massachusetts. Recent examples include the U.S. Department of Energy-funded Building America project Physics-based Interval Data Models to Automate and Scale Home Energy Performance Evaluations, as well as two demand-response pilots.
