On January 14th, architects, building components, systems, and materials manufacturers descended on Munich for BAU, the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, building materials and systems. First held in 1964, this biennial show has since become an international industry fixture; in 2013, BAU attracted 2060 exhibitors from 41 different countries and over 235,000 visitors, including more than 60,000 international attendees.

Among those exhibitors was Fraunhofer’s Building Innovation Alliance, an industry-focused network of Fraunhofer Institutes that explores research opportunities throughout the construction process chain. The 16 German members of the Alliance include Fraunhofer CSE partners like the Institute for Building Physics (IBP), and address a wide range of industry needs, including product development, construction planning, management and logistics, construction systems, and international projects. As the Alliance’s first American member, CSE supplements these offerings with advanced capabilities in building envelopes, residential energy management technologies, technology assessment and energy consumption characterization.

The Alliance’s expansive booth at BAU 2013 leveraged contributions from every member Institute, offering visitors a range of physical and digital exhibits. Showcased items included innovative building materials and design concepts, management systems, visualization and planning technologies, and greening solutions for more environmentally friendly building. An interactive touch table provided additional access to information on Fraunhofer’s projects and innovations in the building space, including Fraunhofer CSE ventures like the Building Technology Showcase.
